چکیده

A compartmental carbon model is presented in which there are parameters quantifying the transfer between various carbon pools. These parameters are estimated using two CO2 data sets (elevated and ambient) from the Duke Forest FACE data set. A quadratic objective criterion is used to compare closeness of fit of system output CO2 flux to the observed CO2 flux data. Adjoint equations are developed based on the system of difference equations approximating the solution of the model equations, the data, and the criterion. Parameter estimation algorithms are developed using minimization techniques. It is found that the estimated parameters obtained using the two different data sets agree closely. 2002 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

Elevated Co2 Differentiates Ecosystem Carbon Processes: Deconvolution Analysis of Duke Forest Face Data

Quantification of the flux of carbon (C) through different pathways is critical to predict the impact of global change on terrestrial ecosystems. Past research has encountered considerable difficulty in separating root exudation, root turnover rate, and other belowground C fluxes as affected by elevated CO2. In this study we adopted a deconvolution analysis to differentiate C flux pathways in f...

Interaction of ice storms and management practices on current carbon sequestration in forests with potential mitigation under future CO2 atmosphere

[1] Ice storms are disturbance events with potential impacts on carbon sequestration. Common forest management practices, such as fertilization and thinning, can change wood and stand properties and thus may change vulnerability to ice storm damage. At the same time, increasing atmospheric CO2 levels may also influence ice storm vulnerability. Here we show that a nonintensively managed pine pla...

Alteration of forest succession and carbon cycling under elevated CO2.

Regenerating forests influence the global carbon (C) cycle, and understanding how climate change will affect patterns of regeneration and C storage is necessary to predict the rate of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2 ) increase in future decades. While experimental elevation of CO2 has revealed that young forests respond with increased productivity, there remains considerable uncertainty as to h...

Leaf senescence and late-season net photosynthesis of sun and shade leaves of overstory sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) grown in elevated and ambient carbon dioxide concentrations.

We examined the effects of elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) on leaf demography, late-season photosynthesis and leaf N resorption of overstory sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) trees in the Duke Forest Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiment. Sun and shade leaves were subdivided into early leaves (formed in the overwintering bud) and late leaves (formed during the growing season). Overal...

Long-term CO2 enrichment of a forest ecosystem: implications for forest regeneration and succession.

The composition and successional status of a forest affect carbon storage and net ecosystem productivity, yet it remains unclear whether elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) will impact rates and trajectories of forest succession. We examined how CO2 enrichment (+200 microL CO2/L air differential) affects forest succession through growth and survivorship of tree seedlings, as part of the D...
